When?  1743 to 1826
Where?  United States, primarily in Virginia; spent 4 years in Paris as Minister to France
What?  Statesman and Founding Father of the United States of America; 3rd president of the United States; farmer; writer; philosopher; inventor; book collector; scholar; historian
Why?  He stood firm in his beliefs and defended that right for others.  He sought wisdom and knowledge to better understand himself, those around him and the wider world.
